The River Tweed. So perfect, some people thought it was a painting

Photographing landscapes requires patience, and a bit of luck

Most of my work tends to be studio based, from my purpose built space in the Scottish Borders. However, one of my best selling prints is this leaping salmon photo.

The shot was taken for a 2013 desk calendar . It was a beautiful chilly November day 2012 on the river Tweed close to Kelso. Everything fell into place ,I manage to capture this perfect shot of the leaping salmon in the landscape. Back in 2012 Salmon were more abundant. The late afternoon light was beautiful, the Salmon were moving up river and jumping every 2-3 minutes. I set the camera on the tripod , taking a few test shots for composition and exposure, I waited with finger ready on the cable release. I knew that I had a good window of opportunity with the light. I managed to capture one shot from the 5 taken, a beautifully perfect leap and curve of the fish above the water.

Lets hope the Salmon return to the Tweed in the future so I can photograph this wonderful sight again.
